Lady in White - Internet Movie Rental - What is the Craze About

An impressive labor of love from independent writer-director Frank LaLoggia, this low-budget supernatural thriller was a sleeper hit in 1988, deservedly praised by critics and horror fans for its effective combination of ghostly terror and small-town charm. The influence of Steven Spielberg can be felt in the movie’s imaginative scenario, but it’s also got the affectionate appeal of autobiographical nostalgia, mixing details of LaLoggia’s own youth in upstate New York with a frightening tale of Halloween horror. It begins when young Frankie (Lukas Haas) is locked in a grade-school cloakroom on Halloween night of 1962; he witnesses the ghostly image of a little girl and is nearly strangled to death by an unknown assailant. From that point forward, Frankie is convinced that the ghost is somehow connected to the Lady in White, a haunting vision of local legend. A black janitor is tried as Frankie’s attacker and suspected in a series of unsolved murders, but recurring apparitions lead Frankie to the truth of the case–a revelation of real-life violence and supernatural wonders. This plot may be a bit too cluttered for a conventional ghost story, but the movie’s ambition works in its favor by providing an emotional subtext for its youthful sense of wonder. There’s an abundance of charm and humor, but this also a moving story of grief and loss, tracing young Frankie’s adjustment to the death of his mother. This gives Lady in White more depth than is typical for horror thrillers, and the movie further benefits from the obvious care and compassion that LaLoggia brought to its creation. –Jeff Shannon

I also think Angelo Bertolini was great! The visuals and graphics make for some very realistic on screen special-effects but that is the beauty of the movie.When the movie wants to be funny it is funny, the same is true for when the movie needs to deliver its scary aspects.

Total Eclipse - Movie Reviews and Your Movie Experience

This biographical account of the tempestuous, taboo-shattering love affair between two 19th century French poets–Paul Verlaine (David Thewlis) and Arthur Rimbaud (Leonardo DiCaprio)–didn’t do much at the box office when it was released in 1995. But after the success of Titanic, it became somewhat infamous when Playgirl magazine announced its intention to publish nude pictures of DiCaprio taken from the film. (Nobody much seemed to care that Thewlis, who also starred in Mike Leigh’s Naked, also appears nude in Total Eclipse.) The truth is, the nudity in question only lasts for a few frames, but it’s certainly in character for the young wild-man Rimbaud.

Directed by Agnieszka Holland (Europa, Europa, The Secret Garden), Total Eclipse begins in 1870 when the newly married Verlaine is 24 and Rimbaud is 17. The volatile combination of their reckless passions, idiosyncratic talents, and obnoxious egos is a recipe for disaster–and l’amour fou–culminating in a two-year prison term for Verlaine who was convicted of sodomy. DiCaprio’s work in this film (as well as This Boy’s Life, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?, and The Basketball Diaries) proves he is a serious actor who’s interested in risky, challenging work–not just the matinee idol he became in the wake of Titanic. –Jim Emerson
